Apple TV is a great device to bring all your streaming services together and bring it directly to your HDTV. However, if you live outside the US, you may face a variety of geographic blocks that limit what content can be accessed. A common technique for bypassing geo-blocking content is to use VPN, one of the things that VPNs do is change your IP address, into the VPN server’s IP address, making it appear that you are where the VPN server is located.
Geographic blocking is a technique of blocking access to content based on the user’s location. This location check is generally done by searching for a rough location from the user’s IP address. By using a VPN and changing your IP address, your actual location changes, allowing you to bypass geo blocks.
Unfortunately, Apple TV doesn’t support VPN at all. You can, however, create a VPN on your router or share a VPN connection from your computer.
Configure VPN on your Router
To configure VPN on your router, you must connect to the web interface by entering a private IP address in your web browser. To find your router’s IP address, press the Windows key, type “cmd”, and press enter. Then you need to type the “ipconfig” command into the Command Prompt window that you just opened. Your router’s IP address will be listed as the “Default Gateway” value. It must start with 192.168, have a third number, and then end with one.
After you find your router’s IP address, enter it in your web browser to access the web management interface. You must enter the admin password to enter the router. Unless you change it in the past, you can usually find this in a sticker on the bottom or back of the router.
When you log in, find the VPN settings. They may be listed under “Network Settings” or “WAN Settings” (Wide Area Network).
Not all routers support VPN functionality, of which only, high-end devices support strong options such as OpenVPN support.
Next, you need to find the VPN configuration details offered by your VPN provider and use it to configure VPN on your router. After you enter all the VPN details, save the changes to apply them.
Your VPN provider customer support should be able to help you access these details if you can’t find it.
Enter VPN details on the VPN configuration page on your router.
To check whether your VPN configuration is working, browse to whatismyipaddress.com on the device connected to the router. If the location displayed matches your VPN server, the process has been successful. If not, double check your configuration and contact your VPN provider or your router manufacturer for support.
Unfortunately, you can’t check your IP address on your Apple TV, because it doesn’t have a default web browser. You must use another device. Or, you can check whether a title not seen before is now available to watch – it can also make sure your VPN works!
Share VPN from your Computer
If you already have a VPN connection on your computer, it’s easy to configure it to share the connection with other devices.
To do this, open the Settings application, to the Mobile Hotspot page, under Network and Internet settings. You can open this page directly, by pressing the Windows key, typing “Mobile hotspot settings”, and pressing enter.
After being on the mobile hotspot page, configure your VPN connection to be a shared network connection from the dropdown box. If you want, you can change the hotspot name and password by clicking the “Edit” button. Once you are satisfied with the settings, click the “Share my Internet connection with other devices” slider at the top, to the “Active” position.
Configure VPN to share via hotspot.
Now you only need to connect Apple TV to your hotspot, and all network traffic will go through the VPN.
Make sure your VPN is configured in the country where your Apple TV appears to be.
