How to Empty Trash Can Automatically on a Mac

Since macOS 10.12 Sierra, Apple has included a way to automatically empty your Trash every 30 days, which can free up disk space and reduce mental clutter. Activating it is easy, but the options require some digging to find it. This is the fastest way to turn it on.

First, switch to “Finder” by clicking on the Mac desktop. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click the “Search” menu, and select “Preferences.”

1
In the “Finder Preferences” window that appears, click the “Advanced” button.

2
In the “Advanced” option, find the option that says “Delete items from the Trash after 30 days” and check the box next to it.

3
Once set up, macOS will automatically delete all files in your Trash every 30 days. If you want to deactivate the option, visit Search> Preferences again, and uncheck the “Delete items from Trash after 30 days” box.

If you need other ideas about how to free disk space on a Mac, you can try deleting duplicate files, deleting cache files, or even using third-party utilities. Have fun cleaning!
